“Some artists are political or say something about society, my work is personal.” - Paul

The Artist Citizen is an exhibition project profiling 8 contemporary Queensland Artists. The exhibition Artist Citizen situates these 8 as citizens among citizens, artists among artists seeking to reject stereotypes of the genius artist, the eccentric or mad artist.

Via this exhibition, these 8 contemporary Artists are contributing essential dialogue and knowledge about personal and community issues as part of a participatory action research project titled Diagnosed Artist.

The Artist Citizen will be launched at

This exhibition evokes the voices of the artists and explores how each person struggles to direct their own creative process, to claim, their right to be artists, beyond perception of their illness. Through painting, installation, performance, sound, illustration and photography the pattern of these artists' exploration, investigation, and critique of mental illness and art is presented.

Weaving the threads of personal, societal, political, and cultural encounter, eight artists narrate their freedom to direct their experience of the artist beyond the boundaries of an Outsider.
